A Dental Assistant (DA) is an entry-level professional who supports dentists during clinical procedures, patient care, and office operations. This role is an excellent starting point for those entering the dental field and can be achieved through on-the-job training, formal education, or exam preparation, depending on state requirements.
A Certified Dental Assistant (CDA®) holds a national credential issued by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). To earn the CDA®, candidates must meet eligibility requirements, pass multiple DANB exams, and maintain current CPR/BLS certification. This credential demonstrates advanced knowledge, professionalism, and commitment to high standards of care.
A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) is a state-level designation that varies by location. Registration requirements depend on state regulations and may include formal education, state exams, background checks, or additional certifications such as radiology. Unlike CDA®, RDA status is governed by individual state dental boards.
